Radon is an invisible and odorless radioactive gas which occurs naturally from decaying uranium underneath the earth's surface. Though you cannot see, smell, or taste radon, it is there and may be a problem in your home or office. Radon gas rises through the soil and seeps through cracks, holes, and drain pipes in the foundation or basements of buildings.

Radon gas can be found all over the United States, and according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) 1 out of every 15 homes in the United States has high levels of radon gas.

Radon gas contains radioactive particles which get trapped in your lungs every time you take a breath. As these particles break down, they release bursts of radiation that damage or destroy lung tissue and cause lung cancer, and long-term exposure may even cause death.

Radon is a radioactive gaseous element formed by the disintegration of radium which occurs naturally especially in areas over granite and considered as one of the major causes of lung cancer. The worst part is that that we can neither see, nor smell or taste this gas. It is present in almost all types of soils and can get into any type of building - homes, offices, and schools - and result in a high indoor radon level. The amount of radon in the air is measured in "picoCuries per liter of air," or "pCi/L." Sometimes test results are expressed in Working Levels (WL) rather than picoCuries per liter. There are many types of low-cost self-help radon testing kits available through online stores and other retail outlets. These kits can test presence of radon in both, gas and water. It is advisable to perform at least two short-term radon tests to get a fair idea of approximate radon levels in your home so that a further reduction strategy can be devised.
