There are two main tests practiced since long to diagnose these medical conditions. First is to directly measure the glucose levels in the blood after an overnight fast, and the second one deals with the measurement of body's ability to appropriately handle and metabolize the high sugar levels after a rich glucose content meal. In general for the overnight fasting test, a glucose value ranging from 70–110mg/dl is considered to be normal while for the an after-meal glucose tolerance test, which is normally performed after at least 2 hours of taking meals, 140-180mg/dl is considered normal.

In case of pregnant women, these values may fluctuate towards the higher sides. The diabetes test is often performed by sampling blood or urine samples.
