As it goes - prevention is always better than cure and same holds true for cancers. It is always better to be proactive rather than be reactive.

Improvement in early detection of cancer has saved many lives. There are some antibody based assays for tumor detection as tumors or cancer cells have been shown to specifically over-express certain cell surface markers. In these tests, the antibody travels through the bloodstream and binds to the specific antigens expressed by the tumors.

Often, these antibodies are attached with radioactive isotopes that can be detected from outside the body by a gamma camera. This also identifies the site of suspected tumor location.
