Mensa Ibex
Climbing SIG
We welcome novice climbers.
The purpose of this SIG is to arrange for people
to climb the walls. Yes, many of us already do that, figuratively,
thanks to the crazy things occurring in the world around us. But this
SIG is about literally climbing the walls--at the IBEX Climbing gym in Blue Springs, MO.
The
IBEX climbing gym is an indoor facility located just off I-70, about 20 miles from downtown Kansas City,
MO. See their Website
at: http://www.climbIBEX.com/.
If you aren't from the area, we can arrange for accommodations
and local travel at no charge to you. Contact Mark Lamendola
at ibex @ supplecity.com (you will need to paste that address into your
e-mail program and delete the spaces).
- To just test out the climbing, you don't need any
special classes or equipment though it is advisable to rent climbing shoes.
- You can test out climbing on the bouldering routes,
which don't require safety gear. Mark Lamendola (SIG coordinator) will be
happy to show you some climbing basics.
- You can also test out climbing on the top-roped
routes, but that will cost you a bit more and require you take a belay
class.
- To take a belay class, you must make arrangements with
Ibex, prior to your
arrival (which is easy to do). We won't do this for you.

FAQs
- Why IBEX?
Because it's the closest quality climbing gym to where the SIG
coordinator lives. If you have a climbing gym in your area, that may
work also. The IBEX provides 20 top-rope climbing routes and has an
extensive bouldering area, so it's very convenient and perfect for
non-elite climbers. But elite climbers also enjoy it.
.
- Why a SIG for this?
Because it's better if you have someone to climb with rather
than to show up by yourself and tailgate into another pair or other
group.
- When are the climbing sessions?
They are on the second Sunday of every odd-numbered month. Members meet about an
hour past noon.
- How do I get signed up for a climb?
You don't have to sign up. But it's highly recommended that you send your SIG coordinator an e-mail
saying you intend to be there.
- What if I'm not in Kansas City?
You'll have to come here--we can't bring the gym to you. We need to
make sure someone can climb with you, so don't just show up. Plan
ahead.
You can probably stay in the home of a SIG member, so don't worry about
lodging costs. If there's a climbing gym in your area, that's another
possibility. Contact the SIG coordinator about it.
- What if I've never climbed but would like to
start?
As with any sport, you need to start somewhere.
- What equipment do I need?
Climbing shoes and harness (if you want to climb top-roped routes). You can rent these or buy your
own. You will also need something comfortable to climb in. Standard
gym clothes are fine--nobody really cares what you wear, as long as
it's clean and covers you! A gym bag
and small combination lock are also good to have with you, but are
not essential. You don't need any other equipment.
- How much does this cost?
See the IBEX site (http://www.climbIBEX.com) for their rates. The SIG itself is free.
- What are the rules?
You must follow the IBEX rules. These are simple, these are
posted, and these are essential. You're a Mensan, so you will have no
trouble understanding or following these rules. Safety at all times, and focus
on what you are doing.
- Do I have to be physically fit?
To some extent. You do not have to be a super-athlete.
Nobody is judging
you based on how well you can climb--only on how well you respect
other climbers and contribute to the overall positive atmosphere.
The most important thing is to practice safety, the second most
important is to practice courtesy. Physical fitness is helpful, but
is down the list
a bit. Technique trumps muscle power. Climbing isn't about showing
how strong you are. It's about enjoying the climb, solving climbing
problems (e.g., how to ascend a given route), and enjoying the company
of other climbers.
- What about my age? I'm no kid anymore.
Heck, I'm over 50. Many of the climbers are older
than that. All ages can climb.
- What if I fall?
That's why you climb on belay and wear a harness. The IBEX staff continually inspects the ropes,
routes, and equipment. They also monitor climbers for safety
practices.
- What if I'm afraid of heights?
This is good therapy for that!
- Does the IBEX have facilities?
Yes. It has well-maintained restrooms. It's a clean place with a
pleasant environment.
- How long does a climb take?
If you are asking how long it takes to ascend a wall route, that
depends on the climber. I have taken some routes in a couple of
minutes, while others have taken me a quarter of an hour. We can stay
at the IBEX and climb for however long we want, within the hours of
operation.
But if you've climbed for a couple of hours you have
probably gotten in a good climbing session. A four-hour session is
probably tops, assuming you go from one route to another. If you are
concerned about traveling to KC for just a two-hour climb, don't
worry. There are plenty of other sights to see and that can be
arranged.
