This diet has sound underpinnings, because it recognizes the importance of all three macronutrients: proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. While this diet does a good job of addressing the hormonal issues that drive hunger, it doesn't address the fundamental physics of fat loss at all.

The Zone Diet is too prescriptive. The precise ratio of macronutrients that it recommends will work for a narrow band of people. It does not work for everyone. On the bright side, it is a missing piece of the good diet puzzle. If your diet is completely whacked out, the Zone Diet will help you get to a point of stability and you can work from there.

How the diet induces weight loss:

  1. Actually, it induces fat loss. You may actually gain lean mass--a good thing--while reducing fat.

  2. It raises food consciousness, thereby inducing portion control.

  3. It moves the dieter close to his/her personal optimum ratio of the macronutrients.

The failing of this diet is it is pretty much a crude instrument posing as a surgical one. There is nothing harmful about this diet, but it is incomplete in its theory and relying solely on it can lead to nutritional problems and excess body fat.

What matters is how many calories you consume, not how many carbs. You can't escape the basic physics, here. It takes 3,500 calories to make a pound of fat--reduce calories, and you reduce fat. Increase calories, and you increase fat.
