South Beach Diet Exposed

The truth about the South Beach Diet

Diets exposed list | Articles index

Of the many popular diets, this is one of the few that does more good than harm
--instead of the other way around. Yet, it has its problems.

In general, this diet works. But, you need to eliminate the "phase" approach. What matters is how many calories you consume, not how many carbs. You can't escape the basic physics, here. It takes 3,500 calories to make a pound of fat--reduce calories, and you reduce fat. Increase calories, and you increase fat.

The phases

  • Phase One, like the destructive Atkins Diet, involves severe carb restriction. Not only does this practice defy all logic, it harms the body in many ways.

  • Phase Two modifies the insanity of Phase One. Still not a good idea.

  • Phase Three is normal healthy eating, and it's here where the SBD makes sense.

What works in SBD

Paying attention to the glycemic index is a good practice. The more glycemic a food is, the more insulin reaction you get when you eat it. And insulin spikes cause the body to store sugars as fat. They also are antagonistic to testosterone. The net effect of this hormonal change is you "run out" of the normal carbohydrate fuel faster. This triggers a hunger response, so you eat more--thus, you take in more of those 3,500 calories that turn into a pound of fat.

Using SBD

Use this diet plan only for reference. Eat the less glycemic carbs, and eat the good oils. But, watch your total caloric intake. You need to determine how many calories you actually need, and then eat about that many to maintain your target body fat percentage (which should be single-digits for men and mid-teens for women).
