Organic Foods Diet Exposed

The sad truth about the Organic Foods Diet

Diets exposed list | Articles index

The idea behind this diet is that you improve your health by avoiding foods that are grown with chemical fertilizers and insecticides. In other words, this diet assumes that eating foods from plants distressed by disease and insects will make you healthier--regardless of what those foods are. If that sounds stupid to you, then you're way ahead of a bunch of people who just don't get it.

While too much tinkering with our foods can't be good for us, there's a point of balance that optimizes nutrition. Organic foods take you to one extreme.

This diet has three flaws:

  1. Just because something has been organically grown doesn't mean it's good for you. And it also doesn't mean you can eat it in massive quantities and still be healthy.

  2. Even organically grown foods contain toxins. There are toxins in all foods--natural insecticides exist in, for example, the flowers of broccoli. When people say "chemical insecticides," they forget that plants produce chemical insecticides all on their own. You are going to eat these insecticides whether nature puts them in the food or man does.

  3. This diet ignores other dietary principles. Next time you are in the organic foods store, look around. Count how many people have potbellies or are just plain obese. Count how many people have a sallow complexion. If this diet works, why is it not working for them? Why do they look so bad? Is that how you want to look?

Assuming you can get food that is actually grown by sound organic principles, you may find that food has higher nutritional value at the time of harvest. By the time you buy it, It may have lost its edge completely because of handling, transportation, processing, and storage.

The organic foods movement has some good thinking behind it. Just don't let that convince you that simply eating organic forms the basis for a sound nutritional plan. And not all organically grown foods are good to eat--some of them should not be in your diet, no matter how they are grown.  Remember, sharks are organically grown and you don't swim with them, do you?

This diet reduces some potential health risks, and that's good. But, it doesn't even begin to address core nutritional issues. And if you ignore those, all the organic food in the world can't save you.
